Garden Roofs

A green roof, also called a living roof, can turn an unused rooftop into amenity space, manage stormwater, and protect the roof membrane beneath it. We build green roofs from the deck up, so the system that keeps water out is designed and installed to last as long as the garden above it.

How We Build a Green Roof

  1. Feasibility and roof assessment. We review the existing roof and work with your structural engineer to confirm the building can carry the saturated weight of soil, plants, and water.
  2. System design and coordination. We work alongside owners, architects, landscape architects, consultants, and manufacturers to select the right membrane and green roof assembly for the building.
  3. Waterproofing installation. Our in-house crews install the membrane and flashings, with sheet metal detailed by our in-house sheet metal division.
  4. Leak testing before cover-up. We test the waterproofing before the drainage and plants go on, because finding a leak afterward means digging up the garden.
  5. Green roof assembly. Root barrier, drainage, filter, and growing media are installed to manufacturer specifications, ready for planting.
  6. Long-term care. Our Roof Care maintenance program keeps drains clear and the system documented for years to come.
